Diego Braguglia, PhD

Diego joined VI Partners in January 2003 as a partner focusing on life-science and biotech investments. He brings over 10 years of experience in life science, medical devices and pharmaceuticals in Europe and the US. Prior to his entry into the venture capital industry, Diego held various managerial positions in the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors*, as well as in biotech start ups in Europe and the US. Diego holds an MSc in Microbiology from the Biocenter of the University of Basel and a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the Swiss Cancer Research Institute (ISREC) in Lausanne.

Neil Kirby, PhD

More President and CEO, Edimer Pharmaceuticals

Neil is a pharmaceutical executive with over 20 years of experience with leading biotechnology companies, including Biogen, Genetics Institute, Vertex, TKT and Stromedix. Neil has held positions of increasing responsibility in global regulatory affairs, strategic planning, portfolio management, non-clinical development, manufacturing and program management. During his career, Neil has been involved with the development, registration and successful commercial launches of several important therapeutic biopharmaceuticals (including recombinant coagulation factors, cytokines and enzyme replacement therapies). Neil received his Ph.D. in the faculty of medicine from the University of London.

Cary Pfeffer joined Third Rock Ventures in 2007 and drives the firm’s overall interface strategy with industry partners. Additionally, he assumes active leadership roles in portfolio companies, functioning as interim CBO through the first 12-18 months post launch, and leading business development efforts. Cary has over 20 years of business development experience, facilitating the successful development and implementation of leading collaborations across the spectrum of newly emerging and established biotech companies. Before joining Third Rock Ventures, Cary founded The Pfeffer Group, which provided business development and strategy advisory services for leading biotechnology and life sciences companies. Prior, he spent more than 10 years at Biogen in a variety of executive domestic and international management roles focused on business and market development, product development and commercial operations. Earlier in his career, Cary spent several years in corporate finance in the Health Care Investment Banking Group of Lehman Brothers. Cary earned his MD from the University of Pennsylvania, an MBA from the Wharton School, and a BA in Biochemistry from Columbia University.

Phil is an accomplished entrepreneur with a long-standing interest in genetic testing and in developing new therapies for genetic diseases. Prior to joining Third Rock Ventures, Phil was the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Interteukin Genetics, Inc. and served as the Executive Director of the non-profit Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center for Mental Retardation, Inc, Phil has authored or co-authored more than 100 articles in scholarly journals and published six books. Phil holds an MD from Yale University, a JD from Columbia University, is a member of the Massachusetts Bar, and board certified in internal medicine and clinical genetics. He is currently a trustee of Cornell University. Phil also served twice (2000, 2003) as President of the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics, and on the Board of Directors of the American Society for Human Genetics. Phil has also held numerous teaching positions at Tufts University School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Cornell University, and has been an adjunct professor of both legal studies and biology at Brandeis University.

Dan Lynch, MBA

More Third Rock Ventures

Dan Lynch joined Third Rock Ventures in 2011 as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence, bringing more than 25 years of experience serving in management positions in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. He is currently executive chairman of the board for two companies – Avila Therapeutics, Inc. (www.avilatx.com) and Stromedix, Inc. (www.stromedix.com) – and a member of the board of directors for bluebird bio. Dan spent nearly five years at ImClone Systems, serving as chief executive officer and chief financial officer. As CEO, he led ImClone through a significant turnaround, helping to restore the company's reputation and to secure FDA approval of ERBITUX® (Cetuximab), a novel cancer treatment. As CFO, Dan led negotiations to form the major partnership between ImClone and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Earlier in his career, he served in various financial positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb over a 15-year tenure. He served on the board of directors and the audit committee of U.S. Oncology, Inc. for five years until December, 2010, when it was acquired by McKesson. Dan received his BA in Mathematics from Wesleyan University and his MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia.
